What Is The Difference Between Vegan And Cruelty-Free Makeup?

by Avvai Beauty 10 Jul 2023

As people become more health-conscious, they are also concerned about how their products are made. The makeup and beauty industry is shifting towards becoming vegan and cruelty-free. No, they aren’t synonymous and yes, there is a difference between the two!
Cruelty-free makeup ensures that the ingredients used have not been tested on animals. It focuses on the production process rather than the source. This means that cruelty-free makeup can contain non-vegan ingredients such as beeswax or lanolin.
Vegan makeup, on the other hand, do not contain any ingredients derived from animals or their by-products. However, these ingredients can be tested on animals.
This is why it is increasingly important to create and use products that are both vegan and cruelty-free. This means your product does not contain animal products nor have they been tested on animals.
If you want to check whether your makeup products are vegan and cruelty-free, you can follow these steps!

  1. Read the label to make sure there are no ingredients that are derived from animals such as carmine, tallow or guanine.
  2. Use a website to check for you! Copy and paste the ingredients list into a website, such as doublecheckvegan and see if it flags any of the ingredients.
  3. Look for a vegan and animal cruelty-free logo on the packaging.
